Green cities are all the rage right now. As environmental issues become more and more prevalent each and every year, forward thinking developers are looking to build sustainable cities of the future which have a thoroughly green, eco-friendly philosophy from green covered skyscrapers, to vast amounts of public transportation to gardens and lush walkways as far as the eye can see. Billions of dollars are being pumped into urban environments all over the world in order to make the dream of a true, environmentally conscious city a utopian reality.
Of course, things don’t always go well.
Look no further than the ForestCity of Malaysia. It was a project that promised to build the most ecofriendly city in the world in just twenty years. It wanted to be a true poster child for what green cities could be with each and every aspect of the trend accounted for from the easy public transportation to the lush, beautiful skyscrapers. It also aimed to be a hub of economic advancement promising fine hotels, golf courses, and dining options that would attract tourism from all over the world. It was a project so brilliant it just couldn’t lose.
Now, as we approach that twenty year mark, we can see that dream will never be a reality. The city itself has been a host to a number of high profile scandals such as corruption charges, a few minor international incidents and the COVID-19 pandemic which nearly decimated the project entirely. Then there’s the environmental impact building the city brought upon the area which is the exact opposite of the green dream it reportedly stood for.
So what went wrong with Forest City? Only one way to find out.
